I wear scrubs when I’m in the prep room embalming, otherwise I’m in professional attire. Every place has different rules, though. I know some people who embalm in their suits!

Please help! While trolling through your blog (of which I am a fan), I read something about how you had to undergo a hair follicle drug test for one of your funeral home jobs. This gives me much anxiety, because I am a medical marijuana patient and I'm currently applying to as many entry level funeral home jobs as I can. Do you think discussing my situation with future employers will inhibit my chances of getting hired? I live in CA, so hopefully they'd be a little more tolerant/understanding?

Honestly, I have no clue since I didn’t have to worry about the drug testing and have only ever worked for one mortuary. What I do know, however, is that SCI only does piss tests (not hair follicle). And I’m sure there are some family-owned funeral homes that don’t test at all. Good luck!

I just started working at a funeral home, as a funeral assistant. My hair is bleached, but I wear it in a professional bob, I was born with light, almost white blonde hair, which is the color of my hair now, but I get comments from my manager that, its not professional, and I dont understand why, if it IS a natural color found in mother nature!

I have mentioned how old school and uptight this industry can be, haven’t I? lol. And this is a perfect example of that. Hair color is important, and a lot of us don’t have the same hair color we were born with (even if we don’t dye it). The majority of funeral homes would not consider bleached blonde hair professional. Welcome to the funeral biz.

Hm. Maybe. But maybe not.

This really depends on where you’ll be living, what you want to do in the industry and who your potential employers are and how much they care. Because I will say that if you are going to meet with families, then yes, communication skills are pretty important. But I’ve also seen some pretty damn awkward funeral directors who don’t have very good communication skills! It also depends on just how awkward you mean and what “not the best” really means.

And I will say that a lot of us morticians are a socially awkward bunch. There are places you can work where you embalm and don’t deal with the public very much if that’s what you’re looking for. Or, once you are licensed, there is trade work (kind of like freelance embalming). Or you could end up at a place where you spend most of your time with the families. It really just depends. And it also depends on how deep your awkwardness runs. Can you fake it while you’re with a family or are you not even able to look them in the eye?

If this is what you really want to do, don’t let it hold you back! You would never know how anti-social and awkward I am when you hear and see me talk with the families. ;)
